Africa is estimated to have close to 34 million orphaned children. In Kenya, the number of orphaned and vulnerable children is estimated to be about 2.8 million. Close to 20 million Kenyans living in rural areas and the urban slums still rely on unimproved water sources, such as ponds, shallow wells and rivers.

Davis and Shirtliff, in collaboration with KENGEN PLC , installed an electric water pump within the school compound. D&S CSR also donated a tank that would be used to store the water. The borehole’s impact was immediately felt by the students and the surrounding community. The students no longer wasted their time twice a day walking to fetch water. Sanitation in the school has improved and water related diseases are no longer a major concern in the school. The school’s population is steadily increasing due to the improved conditions of living.

Wells of Hope is a vocational institution that seeks to address the interrelated problems of youth unemployment and resultant problems. Located in Ndeiya, Kiambu County, the institution seeks to complement the government efforts in ensuring every child attains the highest level of education regardless of social or economic circumstances and transitions to gainful employment and responsible livelihood.

In partnership with Well Aware, a non-profit organisation with headquarters in Austin Texas D&S supplied and installed a complete solar powered borehole pumping system in Laikipia to serve a community that had gone without access to clean water for years after a windmill system failed
. Well Aware drilled the borehole and D&S supplied and installed the equipment. In a colourful handover ceremony the local chief narrated how dire the situation was before the intervention, with many forced to abandon their homes and relocate to areas with access to water. The pmup serves a primary school, a dispensary and the local community.

St Stephen’s School is a public secondary school located in Lodwar, Turkana County. D&S Lodwar team participated in a tree planting exercise at the school as part of their Founders Day celebrations. Later on the same team made a donation of a water tank for rainwater storage.
