Behind the Smile: Solar Borehole Spark Joy at City Primary School

Erratic water supply is one of the greatest barriers to health and dignity in schools. City Primary/Junior School, founded in 1939, has been a cornerstone of education in Ngara, located at the heart of the city. The school hosts about 100 special needs pupils and other regular students.

In 2018, Athi Water Works drilled a borehole for the school that ran on KPLC, with an extension supply to the local community. By 2022, the electrical bills were too high for the school to maintain its operations, and with time the system was vandalized losing some essential components. Renewed hope came in 2024 when Davis & Shirtliff, in partnership with, the Britam Foundation, revived the project installing a solar powered borehole. The system comprised a 7.5 kW pump powered by 14.7 kW solar system delivering 8,000 Litres of water per hour, sufficient to meet the needs of the institution and the wider community. Additionally, 100 trees were planted, promoting greening activities, hence reinforcing the school’s role as a pillar of care to the community.
