Mandera Islamic Orphanage Solar Water Pumping and CommissioningIn the sun-scorched plains of Mandera County, at the Horn of Africa, acute water scarcity disrupted care giving services. In an arid and semi-arid region like Mandera, unpredictable rainfall is inevitable. Struggles with water access have ripple effects, leading to compromised care giving services, including feeding and health care.

Initially, the Centre relied on a generator to pump water from a river, leading to high fuel costs and frequent breakdowns.

Recognizing the need for a sustainable solution, Davis & Shirtliff, under the under the leadership of Mandera Branch Manager, Abdikadir Diriye, in partnership with, Mandera Islamic Orphanage Centre, joined forces to transform the Centre by installing a 4 kW solar water pump.

With the new water access solution, children are assured of better care giving services and nutritious feeding. The facility will be able to accommodate more children, with enrollment projected to increase from 207. The number of caregivers is also expected to increase from 13.
