Mombasa Remand Prisons, or ‘Jela Baridi’ as it is popularly known, is a correctional facility located in Mombasa, Kenya. It primarily houses individuals awaiting trial or those sentenced to short-term imprisonment.
It has previously been criticized for overcrowding and harsh conditions and the prison has since been seen to put in efforts to improve circumstances within the institution.
D&S Managing Director Edward Davis and Coast Cluster General Manager Mohammed Farook, together with D&S staff, visited the facility to hand over the donation of a reverse osmosis plant. The plant, which has a flow of 250l/hr., will be key in reducing instances of waterborne diseases that the prisoners have been ailing from. The visit was an opportunity to bear witness to the conditions that many prisoners face, and to impact the over 400 inmates currently incarcerated at the facility.
During the handover ceremony, the Senior Superintendent of Prisons noted that theirs was the first prison in the country to have this solution for its inmates. He offered his gratitude on behalf of the inmates and added that the treated water will also be used in the dispensary which caters to the public as well.
