Davis & Shirtliff, together with the Lavington Eco Rotary Club and Acacia Moyo, have partnered to implement a project that has not only increased access to water for hundreds of pupils and community members, but also proven a turning point for economic growth in the community.
The installation of a solar powered borehole pumping system in Empakasi Primary, donated through Davis & Shirtliff’s Improving lives Initiative, has, according to Kenny Mann, co-founder of Acacia Moyo ‘ changed the lives of everyone in the vicinity.’ Kajiado remains a pastoralist county, with 80 percent of the region being semi-arid. However, with the unfortunate loss of over 700,000 cattle in 2020 and 2021, many community members are moving from pastoralism to apiculture. The water that is now being accessed from Empakasi Primary School, is affording the pupils drinking, bathing and cooking water as well as being used for Acacia Moyo’s community bee keeping project. With collaboration from the Kajiado County Beekeeping Cooperative, the project will result in additional income for several community members.
