Gacabari Secondary School

Davis and Shirtliff, in collaboration with KENGEN PLC , installed an electric water pump within the school compound. D&S CSR also donated a tank that would be used to store the water. The borehole’s impact was immediately felt by the students and the surrounding community. The students no longer wasted

their time twice a day walking to fetch water. Sanitation in the school has improved and water related diseases are no longer a major concern in the school. The school’s population is steadily increasing due to the improved conditions of living.

The NEED
With a population of 102 students, 50 of whom are living within the school, water becomes a vital resource. The Secondary school previously had no source of water in their compound. Their students were forced, twice a day, to walk one kilometer to a community shallow well where a hand pump has been installed. Mingling with the community twice a day, became a time wasting and laborious exercise to fetch 20litres of water a day. Students were dropping out of school, and those who stayed in school had limited time for their studies and hence were not able to achieve their full academic potential.

THE JOURNEY
Apart from the lack of water, the school had another pressing need – dormitories. The boys would spend their nights in a mud thatched dorm that was highly unfit for any school. The principal then approached KENGEN PLC for assistance in constructing a suitable dormitory for the boys and through this link, D&S CSR was made aware of the need for water in the school’s compound.
